The Young REALTIST® Division of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers, Inc. was created and approved by the NAREB Board of Directors as a NAREB affiliate division in 1996. The YRD founding members were Ronald Branch (IL), Julius Cartwright (OH), Vicki Reed Cartwright (OH), Eve Moss (MA), Renita Read (TX), Roland Somerville (OH), and Atty. George Wyche, Jr. (TX). The original concept of creating YRD was brought forth by Atty. Wyche Jr as an entity that mirrored the Young Lawyers Division of the National Bar Association, the nation’s oldest and largest national network of predominantly black attorneys and judges. The first YRD President, elected by the YRD Founders, was Ronald Branch who served for three years.
Assisting YRD in its creation and approval at the NAREB Board of Directors table were influential NAREB Past Presidents Evelyn Reeves, James Haynes Jr., Albert Johnson, Thom Holmes, and numerous other Realtist® that understood and appreciated the need for the involvement of committed young leaders of NAREB.
The purpose of the Young Realtist Division was to assist NAREB in its membership recruitment and development activities by increasing awareness of NAREB’s history, benefits, and activities among new entrants to the real estate professions; to encourage high school and college students to enter real estate professions; to orientate new members of NAREB through education of its national history and traditions; to foster leadership development within NAREB, and to encourage active participation and involvement of the members of this Division in NAREB’s affiliates, committees, Mid-Winter conferences, and annual meetings.
We are aware ofthe challenges in the real estate market for African American and minority real estate professionals, consumers, and communities. We’re particularly concerned about the low homeownership rates among millennials, especially in Black and minority communities across America. We are committed to solving this issue by growing the YRD community through membership and providing our expertise in making a positive impact within the neighborhoods that we serve and increase our overall community wealth to establish sustainable change.
The “Young” in YRD was intended to have multiple meanings:
Young within the Real Estate Industry – Individuals that are new to real estate-related professions.
Young within the NAREB organization – Typically means that you’ve been a member for less than 3 years or if you haven’t been to at least 3 National Conventions / Mid-Winter Conferences.
Young at Heart – This is a very special and needed category that’s vital to the success and guidance of the YRD organization.
As leadership development is one of the goals of YRD’s Founders, numerous NAREB leaders over the years have been cultivated within YRD.
Of the YRD Founders, three of them served as Realtist® National Presidents:
Ronald Branch (NAREB President 2003 – 2005)
Vicky Reed Cartwright (WCNAREB President 2003 – 2005)
Julius Cartwright (NAREB President 2011 – 2013)
Ashley Thomas III (NAREB President Elect)
